In art, all any of us really have is the space where we have come from. Even as we dream or think ahead, those imaginings have their beginnings in the soil from which we have grown. We remain in this paradigm, searching, celebrating, grieving, growing, learning and changing, but we are never without where we have gone before.
Roots matrix is where my own art lives. It contains many Asian themes, as well as stark reflections of struggles I’ve walked through. Whether paintings, drawings — pen/ink/pencil/charcoal — mixed media, poetry or photography, all contain bits and pieces of life. Being a third culture kid and the daughter of missionaries, you may see the theme of longing in much of my visual work and poetry. Though still searching, bungling, striving, wrestling, you may also see glimmers of hope and home.
